Google and YouTube app duplicate products: why it happens and how to clean it up

Duplicate products in Merchant Center usually mean two data sources send the same Shopify catalog. Find the extra source and remove it without losing history.

The short answer

Duplicates almost always mean two data sources are submitting the same products with different IDs. Typical pairs are the Google & YouTube app plus a feed app, or the app plus an old feed or an automatic source. Pick one source to keep, stop the others from submitting, then delete the extra source in Merchant Center. Deleting alone isn't enough if something keeps re-sending the products.

How duplicates happen

Google's id attribute rules say every product and every variant needs its own unique ID, and that changing an ID overwrites the product and its history. If two integrations send the same catalog with different IDs, Merchant Center sees two sets of products.

Merchants report several routes:

Shopify's channel requirements say connecting the app overwrites an existing product feed "to avoid conflicts". The threads above show that doesn't always cover sources from other apps or Google's own automatic sources.

Duplicate variants are a different issue

If Merchant Center shows Duplicate variant, the cause is inside one source. Two items share an item group ID without a distinct size, colour or other variant value. Fix the variant options in Shopify so each one differs, or remove the extra variant.

Step 1: list your data sources

In Merchant Center, go to Settings, then Data sources, per Google's data sources guide. Look at the Product sources tab. Note each source, its upload method and how many products it has. Products added automatically from your store's structured data also appear as a source.

If two sources each hold roughly your full catalog, you have found the duplicates.

Step 2: decide which source stays

Keep the one you want to manage products from. For most small stores that is the Google & YouTube app, because it updates from Shopify. If you rely on a feed app such as Simprosys for extra fields, keep that one instead. Running both is the cause, not a backup plan.

Your ad history sits on the product IDs in the source you keep. Google's data sources guide advises uploading a replacement source before removing the old one so item IDs and history carry over. If one source has your Shopping ads history, think twice before deleting it.

Step 3: stop the other source at its origin

Turn off product submission in the app you are dropping, or uninstall it. If you are dropping the Google & YouTube app's feed, switch its product sync to manual in the app's Settings under Product feed, as Google's sync guide describes. Google's data sources guide warns that if products aren't removed from the source, they come back on the next upload.

The 400-to-900 thread shows why this order matters. The merchant deleted the Content API source twice, and both times it came back and re-imported the catalog.

Step 4: delete the extra source

  1. Go to Settings, then Data sources.
  2. On the Product sources tab, find the source.
  3. Open the three-dot menu under "Actions" and select Delete source.
  4. Confirm with Remove.

Google says items from the deleted source won't be available for Shopping anymore, and removal can take up to an hour to show in ads and free listings. If a supplemental source feeds rules in the primary one, delete those rules first.

Step 5: watch for a few days

Check the product count under Products over the next days. It should settle at your real catalog size. If the extra source returns, something is still submitting. Check every installed app with Google or Shopping in its name.

If you were suspended over this

Clean up first, then request a review. The appeal guide explains Google's limits on reviews. Google decides the outcome, and one clean source is what you can control.
