Google Merchant Center not syncing with Shopify: causes and fixes

Products missing from Merchant Center after connecting Shopify? Check sync mode, channel publishing, identifiers, the domain claim and Google's exclusions.

The short answer

First work out where products stop. If they are missing from Merchant Center's All products list, Shopify never sent them, so check the Google & YouTube app. If they are in All products but not active, Google received them and rejected or limited them, so check Needs attention. Most sync failures come from products not available on the channel, missing identifiers, or setup requirements the store doesn't meet.

Step 1: find where products drop out

A reply in a Shopify Community thread on missing products makes a point worth repeating: "Most mismatches come from comparing Shopify's count with GMC 'Active', which are not the same dataset." Compare Shopify with Merchant Center's All products first.

Then check statuses in the app. Google's Shopify sync guide lists four, found in the Products tab of the Google & YouTube app:

Select a product name in the app to see the specific issue.

Causes on the Shopify side

1. Sync mode is manual

Google's guide says that with manual sync, "We won't automatically sync your Shopify products to Merchant Center." Check Settings, then Product feed, in the app and make sure product sync is set to automatic.

2. Products aren't available on the channel

The app only syncs products available in your online store, and Google's guide says you choose which ones by changing publishing per product or with a bulk action. Open a missing product in Shopify and check that its publishing settings include the Google & YouTube channel. If many are missing, check the products you added most recently or in bulk first.

3. Missing identifiers or required fields

Google's guide says most products need GTIN, or MPN and brand, before they can sync. Apparel needs age group, gender, colour and size. Media needs UPC, EAN or JAN, and books need an ISBN. See the GTIN guide for how to fill these in.

4. Store setup requirements

Google's app setup guide and Shopify's channel requirements list what the store needs:

5. The wrong kind of Merchant Center account

Google's setup guide says multi-client accounts can't be linked. The Google email you link needs admin access in Merchant Center.

Causes on the Google side

6. Domain claim mismatch

Google's setup guide says the app claims your domain automatically, and if the claimed domain differs from your product URL domain, approvals can fail. To fix it, open Settings > Business info in Merchant Center, select Edit online store, and enter the right domain. That domain must also be listed under Settings > Domains in Shopify. Shopify's requirements add that a domain claimed by another Google account must be transferred first.

7. Products received but not approved

If products are in All products but not active, open Needs attention. Common item issues are price mismatches and missing shipping costs. Google's guide warns that Google's errors and warnings differ from Shopify's, so a product can look fine in Shopify and still be disapproved.

8. Account-level suspension

If the whole account is suspended, nothing shows regardless of sync. Check View setup and policy issues under Needs attention. The appeal guide covers what to do.

9. A second feed is fighting the app

Shopify says connecting the app to an existing Merchant Center account overwrites an existing product feed. Merchants still report duplicate catalogs after connecting the app, for example when a feed app or an old source keeps submitting the same products. Look at Settings > Data sources in Merchant Center. If you see more than one source for the same products, read the duplicates guide before deleting anything.

Things merchants try that may or may not help

At the time of writing (November 2026), the menu names here match Google's and Shopify's help pages. The app gets updated often, so labels may move.
